Stuart or Stuart Blend

blend-stuartThe most prevalent variety in the state of Georgia.

The Stuart has been criticized for being only fair quality medium-sized with a relatively thick paper-shell nuts. Perhaps it’s most often cited shortcoming is the 10 to 12 (or more) years from planting of the tree until the beginning of significant nut production.

The tasty nut kernels are crunchy, produce a unique flavor, and are a great favorite when baking cakes, pies, and candies.

Stuart is the standard cultivar of the Southeast, and comprises one-fourth of all commercial orchards today. Stuart trees produce large, thick shelled nuts, with mediocre kernel quality. It is very slow to begin bearing, taking 8 to 10 years, but is very reliable as a mature tree.

blend-sumner

Discovered in Tifton, GA by Walter Sumner pecan has been around since 1932, Sumner trees produce large, good quality paper-shell nuts that are easy to crack. Considered the best commercial varieties at this time.

Cape Fear

blend-capefear

Cape Fear is a high quality paper-shell pecan that bare nuts at an early age. Cape Fear has good resistance to pecan scab. Kernels do not break when the shell is cracked, making perfect pecan halves.

This cultivar is extremely productive as a young tree, and has good nut quality kernels. As tree matures, excess crop load must be corrected, because nut quality decreases.

Moneymaker

blend-moneymaker

“Moneymaker” is a controversial old cultivar with good yield, appearing among the top four yielders at age 45 and several times thereafter. This round nut has a thick shell and low percent kernel (44), but is usually well filled and has a high specific gravity. Its early maturity in the fall adapts it to the early holiday specialty market.
