How to properly store pecans to keep them as fresh as possible

Pecan Harvesting

Ever wonder how Pecans are harvested? This Video will show you how! We use the latest and greatest in farming equipment technology to ensure the freshness and taste of our pecans. Unlike most fresh produce, which is harvested during the summer months, pecans and other nuts wait until fall. For pecans, harvesting waits until the first hard freeze of winter. This first freeze kills off the green protective shuck around the nut itself causing it to open and expose the pecans inside. It is at this time when harvesting will begin.

Georgia Pecan Harvest

Georgia pecan producers are in orchards around the state gathering up this year’s crop. Due to challenging conditions during the growing season, farmers are seeing mixed results. Recently, The Monitor’s Mark Wildman visited with one pecan producer who is pleased with his harvest so far, but say’s the crop was very expensive to produce.

Pecan Harvest in Georgia

Georgia pecan harvest

The 13 WMAZ News team interviewed Duke Lane of Lane’s Orchards, Ft. Valley, GA, about the November 2014 pecan harvest. Show aired 11-04-2014. There are some interesting things about Lane’s of which we’re quite proud. Besides being a beautiful farm of 5,000 acres, half in peaches, half in pecans, they have a very modern packing business as well as one of the best welcome centers for any such operation we’ve seen anywhere in the country. And their southern hospitality is unequaled. Clean, attractive, and entertaining, you really owe it to yourself to stop by their place on Hwy 96, in Peach County, GA as thousands do each year. The food there is awesome.
